History of the English Language The history of the English language can be traced all the way back to the year 449 C.E. From that point on in history English has developed into the extensive language that it is today. According to Bill Bryson’s book, The Mother Tongue, there are around 300 million people worldwide that speak English. The languages’ history can be divide into four periods of development. These periods are proto-English, old English, middle English, and the modern English that is spoken today. The development of the English language was a long process that originated from many different influences. To begin, the first period of English development was the proto-English period. The English language developed from the Germanic family of languages, which developed from the Indo-European family. There were three branches of the Germanic family, which are the North Germanic, West Germanic, and East Germanic branches. English is derived from the West Germanic branch of the family. The English language essentially originated from Germanic family of languages. ......
