Candide Analysis by Voltaire - All is Not Well in the Best of All Possible Worlds Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the 18th century, there were many philosophers who assumed God, in his perfection and power, made the world and everything in it perfect. Any evil would discredit said God and, therefore, all things in the world, no matter how much they resemble evil, are not really. Everything is for the best. In Candide, author Voltaire sought to discredit this form of thinking by satirizing it using his character, Candide, who goes through all the evils of life despite the protestations of his mentor, Pangloss. Voltaire begins the book with Pangloss’ philosophy, “All is for the best… in the best of all possible worlds” (Ch 1) which he, Voltaire, disproves at every turn throughout the book. It is also a philosophy that Pangloss later on admits to not believing a word of (Ch 28). Voltaire then concludes the book with the idea that “We must cultivate our garden” (Ch 30) so that they may be able to live a relatively good life. The latter quotation clearly compromises the idea of the former because if all is for the best, then there should be no reason for them to escape to a life of hard lab......
