The United States Federal law states that insanity is a fair defense if "at the time of the commission of the acts constituting the offense, the defendant as a result of a severe mental disease or defect, was unable to appreciate the nature and quality of the wrongfulness of his acts." The insanity defense dates originated in 1843, when Daniel McNaughtan tried to kill British Prime Minister Robert Peel. McNaughtan killed Peel's secretary but was found not guilty by reason of insanity at the trial. The U.S. criminal justice system quickly adopted the legal precedent established by the McNaughtan decision. The insanity defense favors most criminals but reprimands a few. John Hinckley Jr. got away scot-free after an assassination attempt on President Reagan. and was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Many argued that his premeditation of the crime was undeniable proof of his sanity. While the jury was presented with an insanity defense in the trial of Jeffrey Dahmer, an animal of a man who killed, mutilated and ate his young victims - he was found both sane and guilty. A......
