Anarchy, State, and Utopia is a written by Robert Nozick in 1974 and it is a powerful defence of the minimal state. When a state takes on more responsibilities than these, Nozick argues, rights will be violated. So the central concern of the book is to explain the nature of the state, its legitimate functions and justifications. The books organization is reflected in the title: Is anarchy protecting and providing liberty? Nozick finds a need for the minimal state. Can a larger role for the state be justified? He finds that it can not. Can the minimal state offer a firm ideological foundation for society? He finds it utopian.
Our main conclusions about the state are that a minimal state, limited to the narrow functions of protection against force, theft, fraud, enforcement of contracts, and so on, is justified; that any more extensive state will violate persons rights not to be forced to do certain things, and is unjustified; and that the minimal state is inspiring, as well as right.
