Introduction
Many years ago, standards-based education, followed by standards-based assessments, were implemented into schools across the nation. Some states take these assessments more seriously than others, some have strict curricula for their teachers to follow and others base take the test results and use them to judge the success of districts, schools, administrators, teachers and students. To have a standards-based assessment, a school has to have a standards-based curricula, which is content that students should know (Lauer)). Are standards-based programs, including the assessments that follow, beneficial to teaching and student learning? There are many researchers who say yes, and many more who say no.
This topic is controversial among educators, administrators, and the state government. I am particularly interested in it for a few reasons, which are the same reasons that I would be biased against the topic.
