The Changeling by Robin Jenkins Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
A novel I have read where a minor character influenced the main character is The Changeling by Robin Jenkins. In this novel, we read about a young boy named Tom who attends a family holiday with his English teacher Charles Forbes. Forbes daughter, Gillian, and Toms relationship forms and changes the whole way through the book until the tragic end, the death of Tom.
Tom and Gillian are introduced in chapter six of the book,. Jus before they set of for Towellan. Alistair, Gillians younger brother, shake hands with Tom with out any hesitation but Gillian doesnt even give the idea that she has even acknowledged Tom:
She did not offer her hand; she merely gave a quick nod and a smile.
The writer also uses similes to describe Gillians behaviour around Tom, especially her eyes:
In their nest of freckles were as sharp as beaks.
Gillian then begins to interrogate Tom on the information he knows about wild flowers, and when he answers her, saying he only knows three, she was about to smirk at such a silly answer but then wonders if there is any irony in what Tom ......
