Since the beginning of civilization, people have marveled at the awesome force of volcanoes. The word volcano was derived from the name of a small island in the Mediterranean Sea, just off the coast of Sicily; Vulcano. In ancient times, people believed that the volcano on the island of Vulcano was the chimney of the forge of the Roman god, Vulcan. Vulcan was a Roman god who served as a blacksmith to other Roman gods. The hot lava and clouds of dust was thought to have come from VulcanÂ’s forge as he constructed lightning bolts for Jupiter, the king of the Roman Gods, or weapons for Mars, the god of war (www.usgs.com). Although volcanoes are common subjects of ancient and modern mythology, religion and culture, they have, over the centuries, proved to be an unmatched destructive and constructive force of nature. To watch a volcano transform day into night, with a cloud of ash and a force five hundred times as powerful as an atomic bomb, is a mind-blowing sightÂ…but to survive it; is a miracle.
