The “Great” Gatsby In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald creates a main character that can be seen as an idol. He represents the American ideal of the “successful” man, who was motivated by his dream that was pursued as an ambitious teenager. Jay Gatsby is considered “great” due to his drive to pursue his platonic ideal of himself. However, Gatsby’s inflated ego, and lack of knowledge of reality blinded him to a lasting reward that would have given his life meaning. Beginning with nothing, Jay Gatz achieved everything except love, which eventually tore apart his “great” image. With a strong determination to achieve his American dream, Jay Gatsby strived at whatever would make his dream come true. The willingness and effort Gatsby put into accomplishing his goal is what made the “Great” Gatsby. As a young, ambitious teenager, James Gatz was easily influenced by his multi-millionaire boss; thus Gatz created an image of what he wanted his life to be like and “sprung from the Platonic conception of himself”(104).
