Romeo and Juliet prologue - does it reveal too much? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Although the prologue reveals a large amount about the events to come in Romeo and Juliet, it does not reduce the audiences enjoyment of the play in my opinion.
Firstly, the audience will already be very familiar with the story, as it is by no means Shakespeares own work: he borrowed parts of different texts and modified them. The most heavily used source for Romeo and Juliet is undoubtedly Arthur Brookes poem, The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet. Brookes poem has the love/hate theme which is included throughout Shakespeares play, and it also shows the star-crossed fate that brought the lovers together. Shakespeare took this poem in its basic form and transformed it into an emotional and highly dramatic play. As you will also be able to see, the title even bears a close resemblance to Shakespeares work.
