Romeo and Juliet prologue - does it reveal too much? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Although the prologue reveals a large amount about the events to come in ‘Romeo and Juliet’, it does not reduce the audience’s enjoyment of the play in my opinion. Firstly, the audience will already be very familiar with the story, as it is by no means Shakespeare’s own work: he borrowed parts of different texts and modified them. The most heavily used source for ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is undoubtedly Arthur Brooke’s poem, ‘The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet’. Brooke’s poem has the love/hate theme which is included throughout Shakespeare’s play, and it also shows the star-crossed fate that brought the lovers together. Shakespeare took this poem in its basic form and transformed it into an emotional and highly dramatic play. As you will also be able to see, the title even bears a close resemblance to Shakespeare’s work. However, Shakespeare did not copy these sources word for word; he made numerous changes including the addition of comical characters to make his story open to a wider spectrum of audience, furthermore he shortened Romeo and Juliet’s time spen......
