In the two poems
The poems At Grass, by Philip Larkin, and Old man, Old man, by U.A. Fanthorpe are both about becoming old. In At Grass Larkin uses more positive thoughts about retirement and becoming older, while in Old man, Old man Fanthorpe has more negative things to say about becoming elderly, but both Larkin and Fanthorpe say their subjects think about their youth.
In At Grass the poem is presented in a positive way. The first stanze is set in the present tense. The subjects are difficult to see. When going on to the third line of the first stanze, the reader can tell that the subjects are horses: Till wind distresses tail and mane;, and Larkin seems to have used a pun in this line: distresses. Immediately they stand anonymous again, out of sight and well hidden.
The second stanza is set in the past which is signified by yet fifteen years ago. The third stanze Larkin reveals how famous the horses were, that many hundreds of people ......
