In America we are lucky to have the freedom to choose and have an opinion on almost everything; however, that is not the case in Islamic areas. According to Azar Nafisi and her Selections from Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books, those living under Islamic rule are forced to abide by many more regulations than those in democratic areas. One such example is that the women living under Islamic rule can not freely express themselves when out in public because they must cover-up with a veil and robe. In her memoirs, Nafisi describes her class of seven students brought together in her house to discuss literature. She illustrates how this one class brought out a side of the girls that was otherwise hidden behind all the forces of the Islamic regime. On the other hand, Virginia Postrel, with her theory in Surface and Substance, deals with the value of aesthetics in what can be considered the American society and economy. She discusses how people sometimes value aesthetics too much, but any purchase based on aesthetics is justifiable. Surprisingly, both societies......
