The Effects of Tillage and Controlled Traffic on Broadacre Crop Production Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Background It is now commonly accepted that the best practice in the management of broadacre farming areas in northern Australia is that of zero-tillage controlled traffic. In my work consulting to growers in North West NSW however, I encounter resistance to the adoption of these practices. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate information related to different traffic and tillage regimes used in broadacre crop production in the northern cropping zone of Australia. In the past, standard management of fallows relied upon cultivation to control weeds, prepare the seed bed and manage crop residue. These practices increase surface sealing and reduce steady infiltration rate (Connolly et al. 1997) leading to less plant available water stored in the soil profile. As a significant amount of the rainfall received in northern Australia falls in high intensity summer storms, the infiltration and run-off rates are of prime importance in the management of fallows, this lead to the introduction of practices now known as conservation tillage.
