Imposition In the world of today deceit has become part of the way of life however, how far can a person go before their life is the definition of deceit? “The Reckoning”, written by Eugene O’Neill, exposes that even within reason there is deceit. Bessie built her entire life on a lie that trapped John, and concealed away her own son’s identity. Lies and deception have a way of coming back to the person that creates them, some say its karma but others seem to have a change of heart and confess to their mistakes. Bessie had it coming to her however; she chose to confess to her lies. Bessie, in “The Reckoning”, had reason for what she had done but nevertheless it was nothing but deceit. Bessie was wronged by her drunken lover when she discovered that she was pregnant with his child. Not wanting anything to hold him down her lover, John Cockran, dismissed the idea carelessly until he accidentally kills a man.
