Kate Chopin implements literary devices, particularly characterization, to illustrate the emancipation of women during the late 1800's and into the early 1900's. In "The Story of an Hour", Mrs. Mallard is informed that her husband, Brently Mallard, was killed resulting from a catastrophic railroad accident. Mrs. Mallard is initially hysterical due the news of her husbands demise, but soon after comes to acknowledge that she is finally free and able to live her life according to her own preferences rather than her husbands. Unfortunately, for Mrs. Mallard, there had been a misinterpretation and Mr. Mallard was never actually involved in a railroad accident. Sadly, she realized too late that her life should be self-governed rather than dictated by others. In "The Awakening", Mrs. Pontellier spends the majority, if not all of her life tending to her husband and children and not having a life of her own.
