In 1800, the English-speaking people along the Atlantic Ocean were optimistic about the new century. The British hoped that their empire would advance in both wealth and power. Likewise, the developing United States had a similar view. The immediate causes of the War of 1812 were unclear at the time; but according to Nardos history of The War of 1812, the conflict between the U.S. and Great Britain was a resulted from buildup of tensions between two nations that exploded into a war that seemed unnecessary and impractical. The War that broke out between Britain and France led the U.S. into a series of economic instability. Furthermore, Americans were outraged at the British practice of impressments, especially after the Chesapeake incident of 1807. In response to the 1806 British Orders in Council, which crippled American trade, the US (under Jefferson) first tried various retaliatory embargoes.
