Macbeth's Change in Character Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Macbeth is the main character in William Shakespeare's play Macbeth. Macbeth goes through drastic changes throughout the play. He changes from a good and moral person to an evil and manipulative murderer. Many different events contribute to the change in his character. The influence of others, such as Lady Macbeth and the witches, contribute the most to Macbeth’s gradual change to evil. In the beginning Macbeth was an honorable man. What first started the change in him was the meeting with the three witches. When Macbeth first meets the witches they say two things that provoke greed and his hunger for power. "All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cowdor!" (l 50), is the first line that makes Macbeth’s ego start to grow. The second is, "All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter!" (l 51). The witches’ predictions motivate Macbeth to the evil deeds that lead to his downfall. By making him believe that he is basically invincible, he becomes overconfident and is killed.
