The construction of the Brooklyn Bridge started in 1869, and took 14 years to complete. The bridge also helped urbanize America. It connected the two different environments, Manhattan and Brooklyn, into one urban unit. Manhattan is more of a residential neighborhood, whereas, Brooklyn is more of a occupational district. Before the bridges, the commuters from Manhattan had to go all the way around, and through Queens in order to get to Brooklyn. Plans for building the bridge began after German immigrant, John Roebling, (a graduate of Royal Polytechnic School of Berlin ) had completed the Cincinnati Suspension Bridge in Ohio in 1867. Roebling who was born in Prussia, came to the U.S. in 1831, building his first suspension structure in 1845 (“The Roebling Family”). Roebling’s plan was a suspension bridge that is hung from two towers that are approximately 20 stories high, and with cables that are over 1595 feet long.
