After the end of World War II, the trend of total war came to a halt. Mechanization enabled the mobilization of an army in hours instead of months; the years needed by previous wars achieve a death toll of millions was accomplished in seconds by newly developed nuclear weapons. It was under these conditions that the industrialized nations realized that as military technology advanced and population grew, each war would become increasingly destructive to the point that the damage caused would outweigh any advantages gained by total war. The Mutually Assured Destruction doctrine (MAD) even predicted that the full-scale use of nuclear weapons would result in the complete annihilation of both attacking and defending sides. Consequently, it was an implied agreement between countries that limited warfare war was preferred over total war. However, although limited war kept countries from complete destruction, the lack of total war meant the ineffectiveness of achieving total peace.
