What are microfilaments and microtubules?
Microfilaments are long and solid 8 nm thick composition made up of small spherical structures called actin. Microtubules are 25 nm thick hollow tubes like plumbing pipes with walls made up of a protein called tubulin. Microfilaments, microtubules and other intermediate filaments make up the cellular architecture called cytoskeleton.
What does microfilaments and microtubules do?
Microfilaments provide shape, movement and structure to the cell. Microfilaments are involved in the intercellular motile transport of vesicles, nutrients and other cell proteins. Microfilaments are also involved in a cell division. They also play a major role in the contraction and expansion of the muscle cell. Microtubules hold organelles in place and maintain the shape of the cell. It serves as trail for organelles and molecules to move along within the cell.
