Dead Poet's Society Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the film The Dead Poet’s Society, the characters underlying strengths and weaknesses are elicited when the characters are exposed to both philosophical and psychological stressor during transformation. Todd Anderson, the films eventual protagonist, transforms from a taciturn and diffident boy into an intrepid and integral young man whom ultimately internalizes romantic and poetic philosophies. When Todd arrives at Welton Academy, his new prep school, Mr. Nolan, the principal, welcomes his by saying, “Mr. Anderson, you have some big shoes to fill young man, your brother was one of [Welton’s] finest,” which is obviously not the most comforting welcome a new student could receive. The fact that his brother was his graduating class’s valedictorian put unnecessary pressure on Todd to excel in school. When Todd introduced himself to his new roommate, Neil, he surprisingly retorted, “Oh, so you’re that Anderson,” solidifying Todd’s fears and insecurities that he must live up to his family name.
