Metamorphosis of Hal in Henry IV Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The metamorphosis of Hal from the beginning of Henry IV, Part I to the end of the play is seen in his actions, lifestyle, and the people that he surrounded himself with. This avoidance of his responsibilities and dishonorable actions causes some major concern for the King because he doesn’t want his son to seem like a “low life”. This also was an agony for the towns’ people to see their future leader misbehaving and ignoring his duties, which in their eyes, would lead to Hal being an awful king. Finally after much time of realization and a lecture from his father Hal begins his transformation from a low class commoner to a high class prince. At the start of Henry IV the public’s view of Hal is riotous, or as Hotspur calls him, “the nimble-footed madcap Prince of Wales” (4.1.95). He parades around town with the “scum” of society, the tavern dwellers, and even though he knows they’re just “base contagious clouds”(1.2.191) he still associates himself with them and follows their lead.
