Popular Mechanics by Raymond Carver Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Children are driven apart by different circumstances, as in divorce and especially when they (the children) or another family member is being abused. Different types of abuse include emotional, physical, and verbal. In Raymond Carver’s short, non-descriptive story, “Popular Mechanics,” a child is torn apart by its parents, but the actual outcome of the infant is unknown and leads the reader to assume that the child must have died. Carver sets a stage of abuse in the three rooms that the father and mother walk through arguing who shall keep the baby and grabbing the infant, trying to win it over. Carver starts the family in the bedroom where the first act of abuse occurs. The father is packing his belongings with a picture of a child by his suitcase. Carver introduces a new character who starts a verbal attack on her husband, “ I’m glad you are leaving! I’m glad you’re leaving! Do you hear?...Son of a Bitch! I’m glad you’re leaving! You can’t even look me in the face, can you?(Paragraph 5)” The mother is already inflecting pain upon the infant, even though it is no......
