Common Sense By: Thomas Paine Thomas Paine’s fame had no reflection on his childhood years. He was born on January 29, 1737 to a poor working class family in Thetford, England. Thomas’s mother died at an early age in his life. Thomas as a young boy attended grammar school but eventually at around the age of 12 flunked out and was forced to become an apprentice to his father as a corset maker. However, he failed at his apprenticing duties and at age 19 went to sea. In 1760 his first wife died and within a year of their marriage. In 1768 he became a tax officer in London, also balancing with his tax office job was his school teach. He was discharged from his duties as a tax officer twice in four years. In 1772 he published The Case of the Officers of Excise, which argued for a pay raise to the tax officers. In 1774 by accident he came across Benjamin Franklin who after some convincing helped Paine reach Philadelphia to make a new start on a new life.
