Homer’s The Odyssey presents an unconventional, and rebellious portrayal of women for the eighth century BCE, patriarchal society in which it was written. Homer presents the female characters as dominant figures, as rebels against the patriarchal society, and as mentors. Homer presents women as powerful and dominant figures. Characters like Calypso, Circe, and the Sirens use their powers to dominate and seduce men. Odysseus cries everyday as Calypso keeps Odysseus captive on her island for seven years. Circe is like a puppet master when she uses her seduction to lure in Odysseus’s men and turn them into swine. Odysseus is overwhelmed by the Sirens’ enchanting song and begs his crew to let him surrender to the Sirens. Odysseus is inferior when he says that he had to be held tightly to the ship by crew members, “Perimedes and Eurylochus springing up at once to bind me faster with rope on chafing rope.” Because of these women’s powers over men, they are dominant figures, and they cause all the men that they encounter to show inferiority.
