Comparison of Domestic and Worker Slaves Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Domestic slaves, or house slaves, and worker slaves, or field slaves, have many differences. House slaves usually have “easier” jobs since they are not out in the sun working on the fields enduring the heat and the torture of whippings and hard labor. Field slaves had to do intricate jobs such as picking cotton, harvesting tobacco, rice, or sugar cane. The differences vary greatly, yet at the same time they were all still slaves. Neither set of slaves were legally able to gain freedom until the Emancipation Proclamation given by Abraham Lincoln . Domestic slaves worked in the house of the plantation, close to the master of the plantation. They worked by doing jobs in the house such as cleaning, cooking, tending to children, and basically any other tedious chore the plantation owner and his family decided for a slave to do. For the most part, house slaves had an “easier” life. They weren’t out in the sun all day long (sunrise to sunset), nor did they have to struggle to stay alive out in bad conditions of intense heat.
