Spartan Women v Athenian Women Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Spartan Women vs. Athenian Women Throughout history, women have had to struggle to obtain the equality that men were inherently given. Before the 1900’s women in the United States were not allowed to vote or own property. It was widely believed that men were stronger and more competent than women, thus, leading people to believe that men should have the dominant role in society. This left women to fill the weaker and more submissive role. They were viewed as homemakers and their only job was to care for their family and home. However, it is apparent that in Ancient Greece, Spartan women were treated significantly better than other women in other early civilizations. They were given “greater freedom of movement and greater power in the household than was common for women elsewhere in Greece” (Duiker, 102). Athenian women were treated as complete opposites of what Spartan women were subjected to. Although Sparta ran a military like state; Spartan women had more freedom than Athenian women.
