La Amistad and Slavery Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In the film La Amistad, the attorney, Roger Baldwin, treats his case as a property issue rather than a case involving morals. It can be said that Baldwin was very smart to handle this case in the manner he did, for if he were to handle it any other way, it may have resulted in his loss. By choosing to treat this case as a property issue, he not only gave the slaves freedom, but he was also able to return them back to Africa, from which they originated. The morals that follow this story are very controversial during this time, and by treating this case simply as a property issue, he was able to convince the judges that the slaves that came off of the Amistad were not in fact from Spain. The morals behind this case are very clear to any human however, during this time the North and the South had very different opinions on slavery. If Baldwin were to treat this case based on morals, he would have most definitely lost this case due to the fact that many of the judges who were making the final decision were from the South.
