Candide (1759) by Voltaire- in which Voltaire analyzes the concept of evil while depicting the woes heaped upon the world in the name of religion. The main character, Candide is an optimistic boy who has been taught by his mentor Pangloss that things cannot be otherwise than they are, for since everything is made to serve an end, everything necessarily serves for the best end (Idealism). Voltaire, in an obvious satire of this philosophy, proceeds to put Candide into the worst possible situations to prove that things arent necessarily for the best (Realism). Candide is thrust from his home, beaten, fooled, beaten, forced to kill: the Grand Inquisitor, a Jew and some monkeys. He hears tales of complete sorrow from an old woman, a slave and the man who had it worse than anyone else. Candide meets kings, scholars, poets, and actresses, all who share their terrible trials and tribulations; while loses those he loves, and who love him. Yet through all of this Candide still clings to the impossible belief (Voltaire satirically asserts) that everything is for bes......
