Labels in Society Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Many kinds of people are denied individuality by their society. There are discrimination laws to protect against the most obvious differences: race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, etc. A difference that is not widely recognized is the refusal to fit into a label. In other words, people who do not fit into one stereotype are somewhat rejected from society. LetÂ’s begin by naming some stereotypes: jock, prep, geek, goth, emo, redneck, unconformist, etc. The list could go on forever but the point is this: there seems to be a name for everyone out there. Unfortunately, this assumption is incorrect. Most people are a mix of several stereotypes. One could be a emo redneck who plays tennis. If society cannot automatically label a person, they are denied their individuality. Society does not want someone who does not conform to some sort of label. These people and their ideas are automatically shut down because others only want to hear what they expect. We can daydream that the world will be diverse and that people will not look down upon those who do not conform t......
