Attachments are defined by Bowlby (1969) as the strong affectional ties that bind a person to an intimate companion. Infants begin to form these affectional ties to others that are close to them during the first year of life. It is a major part of their social and emotional development. When a young child seeks closeness to a certain individual and feels secure when they are around, they are said to be attached to that person.
Research such as that of Ainsworth et al (1978) has found that there are differences in the type or quality of attachments that infants establish with their caregivers. This essay looks at how these differences are likely to influence the individual in later life.
