Revenge in Hamlet Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Elizabethan tragedies, revenge is a common theme, and in this respect the play "Hamlet" is no exception, as revenge drives its plot from beginning to end. Traditionally, revenge is endorsed by the main character who wants justice for a crime committed against his family, when the law cannot or will not punish the person involved. In this case, Hamlet, the main character, is seeking revenge for the murder of his father. However, the secondary characters in the play who encourage Hamlet, who have revenge issues of their own, or who develop conflicts with other secondary characters are responsible for carrying the revenge theme in this play to extremes. Chief among the characters who contribute to the revenge plot are two sons who have lost their fathers to murder: Prince Fortinbras of Norway, whose father was killed by King Hamlet in a land dispute, and Laertes, whose father Polonius was killed by Hamlet as he spied on a conversation in his mother's bedroom. It is clear Laertes didn't like Hamlet before his father was murdered by him, through the speeches he gives to his sist......
