A View from a bridge is set on one side of the Brooklyn Bridge in Red Hook, New York, slums and ghetto’s, on the other side of the bridge, Manhattan, life is of a better quality and better housing an jobs. The story is told as though Arthur Miller is on a bridge and looking down on the family and its problems, yet the other side of the bridge is still in view, this is more interesting and the story is based on the everyday life of a man, a strong father figure, a hard worker and an overprotective family man, as it seems to the family anyway. This man, of course, is Eddie Carbone, throughout the play, Eddie proves to be a masculine man who doesn’t agree with men being camp, we could just all him a 1950’s stereotypical man, but Eddie Carbone is much more complex than that. As the play soon reveals, he has an obscure love for his niece, Catherine, but the feeling may not be reciprocated, possibly because she doesn’t love him in the same way or just that she rules out any insecurities that he may feel this way.
