Physics Coursework Investigating the factors that affect electrical resistance Aim We are trying to find out how the length of wire affects the electrical resistance. Background Electrical resistance is a measure of the degree to which an electrical component opposes the passage of the current. This means electrical resistance is a measure of how easily electrons can flow through components (resistors). Resistance is determined by Ohms Law; Voltage = Current x Resistance (V=IR) Current = Voltage (I=V/R) Resistance Resistance = Voltage (R=V/I) Current Plan The factors which change a materials resistance are: length, width, material and temperature. The length can change resistance because there are more atoms vibrating closer together which will increase electrical resistance. This is because as the electrons collide with the atoms in the resistor, they lose kinetic energy. Width can also change the resistance of a material, because the atoms are further apart.
