Sonnets Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Essay Question: How has your understanding of the sonnet been enhanced by your study of two sonnets in class? The sonnet stands as an excellent illustration of a literary sensation; in spite of being Shakespearean or Petrarchan in form. Understanding one is difficult and must be enhanced by close study and developed by exposure to different varieties. Two wonderful examples of the sonnet are William Shakespeare’s Shall I Compare Thee and William Wordsworth’s Upon Westminster Bridge. Both although contrasting are equally good as they embody many of the sonnet’s traditional features; structure, mood, rhythm, language and a thesis. Together, they are an exemplary starting point for a beginner’s introduction and analysis of the sonnet. Regardless of being Shakespearean or Petrarchan in form, all sonnets must have fourteen lines but the way in which the lines are structured and ideas grouped depends heavily on its fallen category. In a Petrarchan sonnet such as Upon Westminster Bridge there is an octave and a sestet marked by a definite pause. Both introduce new opinions ......
