Explore the themes of Equus 1) Discuss Alan’s parents and how they may have contributed to his unusual worshipping practices. How does Alan’s practice then influence Dysart’s life? The play Equus was written in 1973, by Peter Shaffer. Seventeen year-old Alan Strang is an extremely disturbed and troubled teenager who blinded 6 horses with a spike. Dr. Martin Dysart, an adolescent psychiatrist tries to unravel what could make anyone do such an appalling thing. Hester Saloman, a compassionate magistrate assigned to Alan; pleaded so that Dysart would treat Alan. This essay shows Equus is a complex story of passion and religion. As the narrative unfolds, the audience discovers how Alan came about doing the horrifying act. Alan first came to worship horses as gods, and then blinds six horses. This essay also explores how each character came about contributing to Alan’s problems. The concept for Equus originated because Shaffer heard about a similar occurrence.
