“Rainwater held on to pine needles for dear life and Beloved could not take her eyes off Sethe” (68.) Horrific and beautiful, Toni Morrison’s Beloved travels through the memories and the present life of Sethe, whose memory becomes evoked by different triggers, which involve Paul D and Sweet Home. As the novel progresses, the memory seemingly becomes embellished and eventually leads to a plethora of trouble. Returning from a day at the carnival, Paul D, Sethe and Denver come home to 124 to find a “woman” asleep in front of their house, ironically her name is Beloved. The relationship between the three women blossoms to create a bond. However, Beloved only feels a deep connection to Sethe and no one can stymie her from reentering into Sethe’s life; as depicted by Morrison, “Rainwater held on to pine needles for dear life and Beloved could not take her eyes off Sethe” (68.) Morrison articulates each individual word to embody the structure of this sentence which adds to the effect as a whole.
