How does Shakespeare present tension between the two families in Act 1 and Act 11 of Romeo and Juliet. How does this add to the drama? Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare between 1594 – 1599. The play is a tragedy about two lovers who were caught up in a family feud, which caused friction between two noble families in the city of Verona. From the very beginning of the play, Shakespeare presents to the audience, the tension between the two families. “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny”. Shakespeare is informing the audience that in this play, a very old argument between two families, the Capulets and the Montagues will bring new violence between all those concerned with the families. The above quote alone, tells the audience that something that had happened a long time ago would bring them to fight over it again. This represents that the two families have a problem from the very start of the play. This makes the audience aware that in the play there will be violence, this would make those in the audience feel anxious and want to fi......
