South Africa is currently experiencing a very severe HIV epidemic. By the end of 2005, there were 5.5 million people living with HIV in South Africa, that is, nearly 1 of 10 citizens were HIV positive, and almost 1,000 AIDS deaths occurring every day, according to UNAIDS estimates. It is a fact that South Africans spend more time at the funeral than having their hair cut, shopping or having a barbecue.
