American Organized Labor in the Guilded Age Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Little success can be ascribed to the efforts of American organized labor between the years 1875 and 1900 to improve the socio-economic position of workers. Indeed, the only somewhat concrete victories during this period that could be pointed to are the increase in wages – which is, in any case, quite misleading, since living costs rose at a far greater pace – the reduction of daily work hours, (Document A) and the issuing of several child labor laws. As the working class became even more subject to control by the growing industrial machine, its overall status was in no way bettered to any substantial extent, a fact attributable to the faltering nature of organized labor, to the immense opposition facing it, and to its lack of public support and recognition. Perhaps the single most important factor that contributed to the failure of American organized labor was its own precariousness.
