One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The novel and the film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest were both well done and very similar in their plot, setting, and characters. However, there were still a number of contrasting aspects that came up throughout the story and that separated the film from the novel. This essay will contrast and compare both storytelling strategies, as well as, review how successful the film and novel were in conveying their messages and underlining themes to their audience. The main difference that was seen between the book and movie versions, was that the novel was written through the eyes of the character Chief Bromden, which gave the reader the chance to understand how the mental institution functioned through the eyes of one of the patients. The film version on the other hand, did not do this and mainly focused on the main character/ protagonist, Randall McMurphy. Even though Nurse Ratched was the head nurse of one of the wards in the institution, the power structure was different in the film version, she did not seem to be as powerful as she was described in the novel.
