The Color Purple Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Color Purple Critical Analysis Many people have read the book The Color Purple by Alice Walker. In fact, it has been referred to as one the most revered books of the eighties. One of the reasons it was so popular was the use of many different themes that hold many very important lessons about life. Four of these themes are power and struggle, change, sisterhood, and the repression of black women in America. In the very beginning of the novel, The Color Purple shows the concept of a powerless woman being suppressed by an equally powerless man. One example of this is men use rape to control women, which is what happens in Celie’s case. Power and struggle have a prominent theme because throughout the entire book all of the characters seem to be controlled by something that has more power then them. Even Ms. Millie, the white person the Sofia has to work for after she goes to prison, ends up giving up power to Sofia when she wanted her to teach her how to drive. She is very aware of her lack of power, so when she drives Sofia to her house to visit her children, Ms. Millie makes So......
