Egyptian Hieroglyphics Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Hieroglyphic writing, the earliest known form of Egyptian script, was established in ancient Egypt around 3100-2900 BC. Hieroglyphs create art out of writing and use it to express their ideas. At the beginning, hieroglyphics were mainly used to record the king’s possessions, written in a variety of text on different surface types. However, later on, it became more commonly used for religious purposes such as: inscriptions on stone monuments, temples, administrative records and other records carved on stones. The first forms of hieroglyphs appear on labels and pottery objects. Hieroglyphic inscriptions are arranged on its surface in columns or horizontal lines. There are no punctuation marks or spaces to show the divisions between words. The signs are generally inscribed facing rightward, (though the opposite orientation does appear in certain circumstances) and are usually read from right to left (if they appear in horizontal lines) or top to bottom (if emblazoned vertically).
