Diabetes is a very serious disease that attacks millions of people around the world. This is a disease that affects the bodys ability to respond or even produce insulin. Without insulin, the bodys sugar is not able to enter the cells and be used for energy. Therefore, there is a large amount of glucose that stays in the blood. Therefore, a diabetic has high levels of blood sugar and this creates two problems: body cells no longer have energy, and, overtime, the nerves, eyes, kidneys, heart and blood vessels can be damaged. Diabetes is not an infectious disease; therefore, no one can catch it from someone who has this disease. Diabetes is a life-long disease but can be managed. The number of people diagnosed with diabetes has increased from 1.6 million in 1958 to 10 million in 1997 (Mamas health). Today this number has increased making it a leading cause of death in the United States. It can strike at any age and can happen to anyone. Some symptoms of diabetes include excessive thirst; constant hunger; sudden weight loss for no reason; rapid, hard breath......
