Sex Education in the public schools.
Over the years there has been an ongoing debate over sex education in public schools and its influence on our children. The question is no longer where should the young people learn about sex? But rather how it should be taught. Nearly 1 million teenagers become pregnant each year in the United States. The rate of teenage pregnancy has dropped since 1950, when many teens married and had children. Today, most pregnant teens are not married and are at high risk of dropping out of school and the imminent threat of the contraction of any disease, such as HIV. (p. 217). The role of sex education in the school is of greater importance now then ever before. By denying children sex education we are not protecting them from the harsh realities that they could encounter. Sex education has become an essential part of a teenager development and by not teaching sex education in schools we could be putting them in danger.
