My name in Harriet Tubman and my life has been a monument to courage and determination that continues to stand out in American history. Many people may deserve this Historic Achievement Award, and I am here to convince you why my life of devotion and goodwill deserves acknowledgment. I was born into slavery in 1820, in Dorchester County, Maryland. Being of purely African ancestry I was raised under harsh conditions, and subjected to whippings even as a small child. After abuse from some masters, I suffered intermittent epileptic seizures for the rest of my life. During the fall of 1849, I grew fear of being sold south, so I fled northward leaving behind my unwilling free husband. On my way I was assisted by sympathetic Quakers, a religious group of friends, and other members of the Abolitionist movement. These people were both black and white, who were instrumental in maintaining the Underground Railroad. I soon became extremely involved in this.
