Introduction
The history of the American labor movement is one of violence and bloodshed. It became clear that one of the only tools of protest of working men against their employers was that of the strike. During the onset of the Great Depression, the worker¡¦s strike became even more necessary to the working class laborer than ever before.
Laborers discovered that the sit-down strike was much more effective than picketing or other forms of striking. This is because the workers would show up at the work place, but simply refuse to do any work. As a result, employers couldn¡¦t hire strikebreakers or the police to cause any harm to the workers. In 1936, laborers of the United Auto Workers (UAW) working for General Motors (GM) in Flint, Michigan, launched a sit-down strike to protest the company¡¦s ¡§frequent layoffs, GM¡¦s free rein to fire and discipline any worker, and speedup, the employer¡¦s demand that assembly line workers produce goods at a faster pace (Colman 63).¡¨
