William McKinley Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

William McKinley, Scotch-Irish son of William and Nancy McKinley, was born on January 29, 1843 in Niles, Ohio, a small town with a population of about 300 people. At the time of William’s birth, his father worked at an iron foundry. William’s family had financial troubles at the time, so they could not afford to send their seven, soon to be nine, children to the best schools in Ohio. Even though the McKinley children were under educated, Mr. and Mrs. McKinley valued the little education they could obtain. William was a very serious student and loved to read. Though he took his studies very seriously, he definitely had a playful side. His favorite toy was his kite. During high school, William had, like most teenagers do, a favorite class. His was debate. Even when he went off to Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, his favorite subject was debate. William dropped out of college after his first year there, and like many men at the time, enlisted in the Civil War. He was in an Ohio regiment and served with distinction throughout the war, moving from private to major. When......
