St. Augustine’s “The Confessions” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Many people feel that when they read St. Augustine’s “The Confessions” that Augustine is being hypocritical by telling of his mistakes and then criticizing himself and others who make the same mistakes throughout their lives. One may feel that he is too hard on himself from a very young age and that he needs to lighten up. While one could arrive at these conclusions by reading the beginning of the text, it is when the work is finished that Augustine’s method for coming to his conclusions reveals itself. There is a great difference between Augustine’s feelings as an adolescent and after his conversion to Catholicism towards the end of his life. At the beginning in searching for himself and an understanding, Augustine cries “[my] erupting puberty belched out murky clouds that obscured and darkened my heart until I could not distinguish the calm light of love from the fog of lust” (II, 3-4).
