Hamlet: Caught Between Action and Conscience In Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, one sees how Hamlet yearns to avenge his father’s ghost by killing King Claudius. Hamlet’s decisions and deeds are either performed or left undone, as Hamlet’s conscience overrides his conduct every time he tries to avenge his father. Although Hamlet’s desire to kill Claudius waits to be unfolded, the power of his conscience overcomes his actions every time. It is first necessary to understand Hamlet’s point of view in the midst of the confusion of Hamlet. Hamlet is dealt a difficult hand in this play. George Detmold implies that, “Hamlet is surely the most perplexing character in English drama…How can a man so dilatory, who misses every opportunity to achieve what apparently he desires, who requires nearly three months to accomplish simple and well-justified killing--how can such a man be classed a tragic hero?” (124).
