Female vs.Male Brain Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Male and Female Brains Abstract This paper is a selective review of experiments and studies that have been conducted over the past decade in an attempt to understand how male and female brains differ. The various methods used to explore the question ‘how are men and women different’ are discussed, along with their advantages and limitations. The paper examines the human model for research in terms of prenatal hormonal environments, ability to recover from early brain insult and cerebral blood flow and glucose metabolism imaging studies. Advantages of the animal model are discussed in terms of the ability to conduct causation experiments, control postmortem studies, apply prolonged and acute stress and administer/remove hormones and receptor-blockers. The dual role of brain sex-differences is briefly discussed, in terms of how sex-differences can lead to sexsimilar behaviour by compensating for other sex-differences. Consistencies and implications are drawn out from the studies, but the problem remains complex and with a variety of approaches to examining sex-difference......
